We were standing in the kitchen yesterday afternoon when I looked out the window and witnessed The Fall. The maple that has been sprinkling leaves for the last few weeks decided to let it all go and we watched as it rained leaves. It was magical as so many moments have been this autumn, we stood and watched the yellow rain. After a while a gust of wind blew through and the leaves fell ever faster. Now our lawn is covered in a yellow carpet. A wet carpet as the fall happened just a few hours before a very heavy night of rain.
I am feeling much better this Sabbath day. This week I have knocked on the door of despair, have had some prayers answered and some prayers I haven't found the answer to yet. I have regained peace.
I am so grateful for the lovely Indian summer we have had, full of sunny but not hot days; it ALMOST makes up for our nearly non existent summer. I am glad that it has rained because I need to plant my spring bulbs and the earth was too hard to dig in. Hopefully the rain has softened it up.

Sabbath Leaves
Blessings: My little garden. Didn't plant until well after Mother's day as we had just moved in. But Moose made it a priority early on. We used the boards from our old garden boxes at the other house. I already had all of the seeds. The cost was $38 for 20 lags of soil. With the rotten spring weather we aren't that far behind everyone else.
Striving For: The strength to endure. Praying that the old house sells.

Sabbath Leaves

This week has been a glorious week full of answered prayers, quiet contemplation, temple worship, courage has been given as well as and countless opportunities to serve. How grateful I am for these opportunities and the immediate, yet intangible blessings I have received. My cup runneth over and there is not room enough to receive it.

A Prayer Concerning My Garden
Thank you for the bounteous and fruitful garden this year. 7th time's a charm eh? I am so excited for all of this green goodness. The potato plants are really getting huge. I love the green carpet of lettuce too. Thank you for helping those green onions to come up, I was starting to lose confidence. How do you think the soil is for the rhubarb/blueberry patch? Let me know so I can have time to fix it. I was thinking we should have a game plan for whatever it is sneaking a bite of the strawberries. I am a little worried about the bok choi and broccoli raab, I don't really want to eat either right now, and there is so much. What should I do? Next time I think we should go with plain broccoli and BABY bok choi and just a few of those. Tonight I noticed how you designed most of the leaves in the garden to funnel the water down to the base of the plant. Really, brilliant! I love that. Thanks again, and as usual, please, can I have some decent tomatoes this year?
Amen

Happy Easter - Sabbath Leaves
This is a repost from a while back. It seemed appropriate for this day celebrating the resurrection of our Lord and savior. Today is very blustery yet there is sunshine in my soul. My house is filled with cherry blossoms, Easter eggs and blessings overflowing. The other night I had a dream, a vision of the second coming.
We were standing in a building when suddenly there was a tremendous boom accompanied by an engulfing bright white light that shot in from the atmosphere like a comet. The light was bright brighter than anything you have ever seen but it didn't hurt your eyes. It penetrated the whole world. Every corner, crack and crevice was filled. There was not a soul on earth that didn't see the light. "So this is what it means" cried out my soul "When they say that when he comes again everyone will know it."
And HE was there. His coming had knocked out all of the windows and everyone in the world could see him from where their windows had once been. We were all drawn to him. He was beautiful, blonder, younger than I imagined and did not have a beard. I could barely keep my feet on the ground as they kept rising up behind me so I could fly to him.
Those who were not believers tried to rationalize it all away but they could not because he was there. We were sorry for them but he was there and our hearts were filled up.
I went to him and told him I was not worthy. He understood.
Mosiah 27: 31"Yea, every knee shall bow, and every tongue confess before him. Yea, even at the last day, when all men shall stand to be judged of him, then shall they confess that he is God;"

Sabbath Leaves
Our Beautiful World: It is so fun to be driving somewhere and see the bright blooming forsythia bushes. I am grateful for all happy yellow blooms in early spring.Blessings: A great marriage. I went into marriage thinking it would be the hardest thing I would ever do only to be serendipitously surprised by how easy it was. Maybe we are just fortunate that we fit well, don't hold grudges and love each other through service.
Striving: Still to pray always and also to be prepared.

Inspirations: Julie B. Beck General Relief Society President: "One day before she left, I sat weeping with her and asked, “Who will be my mother?” Mother thought carefully, and with the Spirit and power of revelation which comes to women of this kind, she said to me, “If I never come back, if you never see me again, if I’m never able to teach you another thing, you tie yourself to Relief Society. Relief Society will be your mother.”

The Happiest Place on Earth

Afton wanted to know what the deal was with my Disneyland remark on yesterday's Sabbath Leaves. It is complicated and has a lot to do with me being selfish, sounds like a good blog post...
We are having a family reunion at Disneyland this Thanksgiving. I am not excited. I have never really had a desire to go to Disneyland. I mean as a kid I wouldn't have said "No" to an offer but I never dreamed of Disneyland.
Reasons why I don't want to go:
The commercialism of it all. Yuck it just makes me want to gag. Disney everything all for sale! Don't even get me started on how ticked I am at Disney for getting copyrights for everything extended just so they could hold on to vintage Mickey.
I have issues with Disney movies, fun movies and all. I am a huge fan of the art in Sleeping Beauty and used to be obsessed with Snow White but the way they twist the original fairy tales really bugs me. It isn't the fact that they do it but the fact that after one of their movies is out it becomes synonymous with the fairy tale and the original is lost to the public knowledge. How many people know that the Little Mermaid really dies, that Beauty from Beauty and the beast had sisters, that the witch tricked Snow White with a poisoned comb, and tight corset strings before the apple, that Sleeping Beauty lay asleep for 100 years and many princes died trying to reach her?
I have problems with the values Disney teaches through their movies. Fairy tales by their very nature are made to teach virtue to children.
In the Disney version of The Little Mermaid Ariel disobeys her father, runs away, sells her soul to the sea witch and wins the prince in the end. In the original she dies because she did not listen to her father. Which would you rather your children learn that by disobeying they could be in mortal danger or that by disobeying and selling your soul you will win happiness? There is also the universal theme of true love conquers all in their movies, and you know what sometimes true love isn't enough. Sometimes love at first sight isn't love. Often the Disney Characters think that they know better than their parents or caregivers.
And then there are the crowds. We are going in November so it probably won't be as bad as it could be but I hate crowds of tourists. I try to avoid them at all costs. I like to go to the Children's Museum on days when there will not be any field trips so we can have room to enjoy the experience and not be worried about losing people.
There is the whole carnival aspect of it. I can't shake the foreboding feeling that it will be like a big expensive carnival, hot, dusty and sticky.
Which brings me to the expense. The whole things seems to me like a gigantic HUGE waste of money. I can't fathom how much we will spend and couldn't that money be better used for practical things or many small, economical family vacations?
I am betting dollars to doughnuts that the costumes will not meet my exacting standards and that will annoy me.
And this whole "Happiest Place on Earth Thing" Really? I am pretty sure I will have sore feet, a headache and a hungry belly combined with cranky over tired children. I will be worried about kids running off. There will also be the family reunion stress of making sure 17 people are happy and getting to what they want to do. How exactly will this be happy? I think that seeing a happy Cinderella and Jasmine walking down the street will really tick me of in these moments.
And so in preparation for our family reunion I am striving to get a better attitude about Disneyland. Do you think they sell those in the gift shops?
