Short Pants

I have previously championed the return of many historic forms of dress including (but not limited to) the lightly boned corset, bonnets, full 50's style skirts, petticoats and aprons (not assembled together however, that is a bit weird.)

But never have I have a more practical cause than dressing boys in short pants.
Ever notice how boys wear holes in the knees of their pants no matter how long they have been wearing them? Commander C wears his church pants for precisely 3.5 hours a week doing "reverent" activities and he still manages to wear out the knees. It is as if boys' knees radiate a fabric degrading signal.

In earlier times little boys wore short pants and graduated into trousers around puberty. Children were easily distinguished from young men. Getting your first pair of trousers was a rite of passage.

If one is worried about cold legs the practice of knitting wool socks is coming back into vogue. I realize this is not practical for those living in areas with harsh winters but for those of us in milder climates I believe this is a practical solution. You just wait until the great depression of 2009 and we are all making our son's pants. Shorts will start looking very attractive.

For dressy clothing, I heartily recommend www.frenchtoast.com and their boys reinforced knee pants. W attended a charter school for kindergarten and had to be in uniform...so it wasn't just church, it was school and *gasp* recess in those nice pants... in the course of a year he only wore through one knee (of 4 pairs of pants). That's a record, considering that he'd previously been known to wear through a knee in one wearing!!! And they're only about $15!
